Overkill “The Wings of War”
By: The Hellion
The “Mean Green Machine” from the Garden state are back and as expected they deliver a Greg” The Hammer” Valentine style Elbow Drop to your cranium with another “Skullcrusher” of an album!
The boys from Jersey are again at the top of their game on their 19th album. Yes, you read that right, 19th album. Wow, where has the time gone! I remember picking up “Taking Over” on cassette (yes, cassette) back in the 1980’s. I have been a fan ever since. There is no other metal band out there who compares to Overkill in terms of the hard work and straight ahead drive this band brings to their craft.
Blitz, D.D., Derek Tailer, Dave Linsk and Jason Bittner have delivered another modern day thrash classic. Blitz and D.D. are the elder statesmen who have guided the Overkill battleship over the years. They continue to steer the listener into war and come out victorious with a mix of thrash riffs, punk attitude and overall heaviness Derek and Dave have been with the band for a while now and provide the razor sharp guitar riffs and solo’s with precision. Jason Bittner (Shadowsfall, Flotsam and Jetsam) has stepped in behind the kit and beats the skins to a pulp on this release.
Overkill occasionally have been criticized for lack of variety, which is ridiculous. I think this quote below from Kerry King (Slayer) describes Overkill perfect:
“If I’m in a corner, I like my corner. It’s coolest corner I’ve ever been in”
“The Wings of War” invites listeners again to join them in Thrash’s “Coolest Corner”. I have been in the corner with them for 30+ years and don’t plan on leaving. If you haven’t yet been in the Overkill Corner, there is still plenty of time and room join the “Skullkrushers!”! You won’t be disappointed.
The Hellion’s tracks to crank at 735 watts on this cd are: Last Man Standing, Bat Shit Crazy, and Welcome to the Garden State.
5 Metal fists in the air on this one!
